May has been a flurry of activities. Lots of fun times...
Is it just me or does it seem like once the weather breaks and warm, sunny days are upon us, that weekends fill up with all kinds of "stuff to do"? (Both of the fun and uh, not so fun varieties...) Although lately, it's been more fun!
So, what's been going on?
Let's see... I participated in the Indy 500 Mini-Marathon. And I'll elaborate that I participated in the 5K, which is NOT the mini-marathon of 13+ miles, but it's much slower little sister.
For never participating in such a major event, I really didn't know what to expect. The weather was perfect (for May in Indiana.) I couldn't believe the number of people (thousands!), I couldn't believe the scenery (awesome!) In fact, I can't remember ever taking a walk where huge elephants lined my route! The fact that we walked along White River Gardens provided a unique and really scenic trip. Along the way there were all kinds of bands and people shouting encouragement. You couldn't help but get caught up in all the excitement.
Afterward, we collected our 5K medals, which in our minds, didn't shine near as brightly as the Mini-Marathon medals, but I am still incredibly proud of my medal and my accomplishment.
My girlfriends and I decided we would make the commitment to participate in the Mini itself next year... which means for me that my ass ought to be outside training for it uh, NOW!!!
We had so much fun... I love spending time with my friends. They're the best!
Spent the weekend with my daughter for Mother's Day which was also lots of fun. We started out the visit with a trip to my favorite Indian restaurant in Indianapolis, Taj of India... YUM! I love their lunch buffet! (naan, curry, palak paneer... a little bit of heaven, for sure!) All my favorites at affordable prices. The family who owns the restaurant is just great, too... always very personable, which makes every visit a treat.
Later that evening Sarah and I went to see the band DeVotchKa at the Vogue. I had been introduced to this awesome band via XM. If I was to try and describe their music, I would struggle. A really unique sound that marries mariachi guitars, violins, trumpets, amazing percussion, and a kick-ass tuba! There are shades of Latin, Eastern European, and punk all jumbled together with a dreamy lead singer, who I can SO picture with his guitar, singing up to me on my balcony on a balmy summer night... (ok... so maybe I don't have a balcony, but a girl can dream, can't she???)
If you ever get the chance to catch them in concert, do it. I promise, you will not be disappointed!
Opening for DeVotchKa was a singer named Basia Bulat... She opened the show singing a'ccapella and clapping and stomping her feet as the accompaniment. And as bizarre as that sounds, she had the whole place dead quiet and in the palm of her hand.
Sarah gifted me with Basia's cd, and it is awesome. Basia plays the auto harp, while the rest of the band includes talented musicians playing violin, cello, and drums.
Aside from the food and music, it was just great hanging out with my daughter. She's a blast!
Ok... it feels good to be back among the writing again... but I need to get busy around here. I have some house and yard work to get done.
